Christmas in Mallorca

Christmas in Mallorca – a time of relaxation, renewal and celebration for family and friends. Whether you want to spend a few busy Christmas or if you prefer to spend more quietly, Mallorca offers a wide range of activities and places that lend themselves to it. It is essential to visit the Christmas markets that make us know the most charming part of the island.

Puerto Portals: from 15th December to 7th January

From 15th December, Puerto Portals will be a place full of Christmas in Mallorca spirit thanks to its “Christmas Market” with dozens of stalls, where, in addition to give us some ideas for the Christmas presents, you can enjoy a good culinary proposal, with traditional Christmas specialties and international dishes, such as “Kartoffelsalat” or “Lebkuchen”.

Plaza Major: open every day from 10:00h to 21:00h

The Plaza Mayor overflows with Christmas charm. You can buy decorative objects and gifts or visit the nativity scenes that are mounted in the different squares, being the most famous in the Plaza de Cort.

Pueblo Español: from 1st to 10th December

At Christmas in Mallorca, the streets and squares of Pueblo Español in Palma become a winter wonderland, with many gift stands, charming food and drink stands and, of course, the special appearances of Santa Claus. El Pueblo Español is located in the Son Dureta area and has free parking. Totally recommended, you will be fascinated.

Alaró: from 16th to 17th December

Discover Alaró during this 2-day Christmas market that takes place every year in December.

Port Adriano: from 21st December to 6th January

Port Adriano has a 300m2 track and a 30m long slide for the whole family.

Christmas in Mallorca – family activities time

There will be exhibitions, ice skating classes with access and use of free equipment and a Christmas concert.
The hours are from Monday to Friday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

The innumerable churches, sanctuaries and hermitages scattered throughout Mallorca pay special attention to their Christmas decoration. Join one of the most important social activities on the calendar of La Seu, the magnificent cathedral of Palma, on Christmas Eve. The Midnight Mass takes place at midnight on the day before Christmas and, here, it is an impressive event that also takes place in Lluc, the most sacred monastery in Mallorca.

Of course, do not miss the opportunity to visit the city of Palma, the heart of the city, during Christmas in Mallorca. There you will be able to walk seeing the Christmas markets and the lights that adorn the streets; they will make you believe that they are in a fairy tale allowing them to live the real Christmas.

Hiking Mallorca – the best open air sport

Hiking Mallorca has always been and will always be a magnificent sport to practice in a dream destination for everyone, being able to practice amount of outdoor activities. With the incomparable mild climate of the Balearic Islands, you should not miss the hiking routes that this beautiful island offers us, because as well as being able to cross it by bicycle, we can go on foot. Some of the most well-known routes perfect for hiking Mallorca, which we differentiate by their levels of difficulty, are the following:

  • Sant Elm-Sa Dragonera (medium difficulty)

Leaving from Andratx towards Sant Elm, passing through the Avenida de la Trapa towards the Tomeví road, it goes down until reaching the old monastery that is currently becoming a mountain refuge; we can contemplate wonderful views of the whole landscape including the Island of Dragonera and Cala en Basset.

  • Artà-Lluc (high difficulty)

Structured in several stages it also provides a fun and signalized tour.

Stage 1: Artà– Sa Duaia- Cala Torta- Torre d’Albarca- Refuge of S’Arenalet des Verger (17.258 km) -Parcialally signposted
Stage 2: S’Arenalet des Verger- S’esquena Llarga- S’Alqueria Vella d’Avall- Ermita de Betlem- Betlem (14,092 Km) -Signified
Stage 3: Betlem- Caloscans- Colònia de Sant Pere- Sa Canova- Son Serra de Marina– Son Serra- Montblanc- Santa Margalida (31,261 Km) -Partially signposted
Stage 4: Santa Margalida- Llubí- Inca (23.408 km)
Stage 5: Inca- Selva- Caimari- Lluc (15,170 km) -Partially signposted

  • Es Galatzó-ses Sínies (low difficulty)

In a walk of just over an hour, also adapted for people in wheelchairs; we find areas of traditional culture, typical mediterranean vegetation, a rest area and the village of Ses Sínies, an archaeological site dating from the Bronze Age.

  • Torrent de Pareis-Sa Calobra (medium difficulty)

Called “Natural Monument” in 2003 for the diversity of its fauna and flora. It has been progressively transformed avoiding the consequences of human action and develops on a rough soil free of moisture. All its way ends in sa Calobra, in the Sierra de Tramuntana, a totally recommended destination.

  • Sa Pedra en Sec (high difficulty)

Hiking Mallorca knows also the route of “Pedra en Sec” (= dry stone), aslo known as GR-221. It is a 283km trail that crosses the Sa Serra de Tramuntana de Mallorca from end to end. It is known by this name for the amount of constructions made with the method of dry wall construction that are found as they go along the road combining coastal areas, little or no inhabited towns and villages; agricultural areas; forests; bushes and the highest peaks.

Finally, it is worth mentioning in this post of hiking Mallorca “the route of the almond trees”; so called because in the Balearic Islands, thanks to its great flora richness and its mild climate, more than 7 million trees bloom from the end of January, especially in the municipalities of Marratxí, Bunyola and Sóller or also in towns such as San Llorenç, Son Servera or Llucmajor. A recommended route would be the one that goes from Selva to Moscarí, where we will enjoy without limits the authenticity and color of these beautiful trees in bloom.

Mallorca Winter – Known as a summer destination with a lot of  sun and beautiful beaches, the main island of the Balearics offers much more, special in the winter months.

Palma de Mallorca in Winter is an ancient city with a lot of activity and authentic traditions; The rural environment throughout the island is green and just beautiful to visit and the Serra de Tramuntana is covered as a backdrop of white snow. All this makes Mallorca a very successful place in which to spend your Christmas holidays as a family or have a short getaway with friends.

Christmas markets in Palma:
The spectacular craft market Som Nadalencs is located in the Plaza Mayor. Popular for its figurines of Bethlehem and for the typical mallorcan gastronomic products.

The Arrival of the Three Kings:
If something represents Spain, these are the 3 kings and on Mallorca its a spectacular event, if they arrive.The streets are filled with lights, camels and riders. Specially for children its  full of color and magic, the highlight of every Christmas season.
In some places like Porto Cristo or Cala Millor you can appreciate the beauty of seeing the three Kings loaded with gifts on a boat, arriving at the famous white beaches of Mallorca that for a night filled with magic and fireworks.

But not only is Christmas something beautiful on Mallorca in winter; during all the winter months occur events worth seeing, such as the birth of the blossom of the almond trees.
Between January and February all almonds of Majorca dress in white, blue and pink flowers, a print that has served as inspiration for paintings, novels and photographs.
You can visit places full of such almond trees as Randa or Sóller, or taste typical dishes of the almond on Mallorca like the Gatò (vanilla ice cream with a sweet almond cake) or the homemade Turrón (a kind of spanish confectionery). Book one of our beautiful holiday homes surrounded by countryside and almond trees and live close to these beautiful event.

You can also enjoy the celebration of San Sebastián in Palma or Sant Antoni in the rest of the towns, in January, this party was founded on the Island of Mallorca and really is fascinating.
If you like animals you can not miss the celebration, as hundrets of people bring their animals to be baptized.
And if you like food and good celebrations you can not miss this evening, where the streets are filled with bonfires and typical dances to their surroundings, music and fun.

Also during the winter there are many cultural offerings, you can see thousands of sculptures in the streets and cities of Mallorca, and many museums at your disposal from great sculptors and architects, to great painters or museums of Majorcan history.

Now you know! Mallorca is great in its fullness throughout the year, it is culture, it is beauty, it is so much more than sun and beaches.
