TAPALMA – Competition and route of tapas and Cocktails 2018

TaPalma – An event to participate, try and create

TaPalma – from Wednesday, October 31 and until November 4 in Palma, the tapas fair will be held and, for two years now, also cocktails. In addition, on Monday, October 29, two days before the beginning of the gastronomic route, the TaPalma 2018 Contest will take place, where all the restaurants that register in TaPalma have the right to participate in the contest but, in no case, the obligation.

One of the main attractions is the celebration of the TaPalma 2018 Competition in which all the restaurants that enroll in TaPalma can participate.

The winners of the last edition were Rodrigo Vallejo, chef of the restaurant Shamrock, with two golds in the category of tapas: Tapa Tapama ‘Picnic’ and thematic cover ‘Quelypizza marinera’. While in the cocktail mode the winner of the Gold was the bartender Víctor Abal, from MG Little Italy with his creation ‘Deseo de otoño’.

The event, which will take place in just over a month, is full of novelties and surprises, and with a single objective, such as increasing the number of visitors, as well as the quality and professionalism of the tapas and cocktails presented.

An event aimed solely at catering partners Mallorca (the association offers discounts and promotions for all who want to associate and participate in TaPalma), whose goal is not only to revitalize the city for a few days thanks to the restoration sector, but to position Mallorca, and very specifically its capital, as the nerve center of Spanish gastronomy.

With this gastronomic event, the organization together with Restauración Mallorca, aims to lengthen the tourist season by attracting its restaurants, not only to the local public, but to national and foreign tourism during those months where there is a decrease in the public and, therefore, less activity.

The event, which will take place in just over a month, is full of new features and surprises, and with a single objective, such as increasing the number of visitors, as well as the quality and professionalism of the tapas and cocktails presented. The purpose of TaPalma is to continue supporting a vital sector in the daily economic activity and, at the same time, it depends on the flow of tourists and the general public.

In 2018, more than 30 establishments will be participating and the routes will include the areas of: Santa Catalina, Paseo Marítimo, Central Palma, Blanquerna, Génova, Playa de Palma, Mercado de San Juan, and Marratxí.

Mallorca Wine Express – Viticulture and wine production originated in the Caucasus (today Georgia) and in Asia Minor (Turkey). The first thing worth noting is that wine, throughout history, has been very well considered by Western high society, essential in any event or celebration and becoming a symbol and companion of treaties at historical level.
Mallorcan wine has become one of the most valued, opening the way among Europeans for many years and to make itself known, the island offers a very original and fun way to do it: the Mallorca wine Express.

It is a tourist train, decorated and decorated in the style of the nineteenth and twentieth century, which has its route through the center-north of the island (in the region of “Es Raiguer”) an area with quiet municipalities and full of vineyards following from Palma to Inca. The “Wine Express” is a peculiar way of getting to know everything related to Mallorcan wine, at the foot of vineyards and with visits to its wineries, where they will explain the elaboration processes that must be followed.

During the Mallorca wine express, they stop at different vineyards so they can taste the magnificent results of the vine while they receive an explanation about the different vines and the fruit that it produces. In the end, even with a tasting with aperitif of several types of wines, you can have dinner in the well-known Santa Maria del Camí restaurant, located next to the famous Macià Batle winery.

The end of the journey is carried out in the Bodegas Ca’n Ribas de Consell, a beautiful place where we can see again the process of wine storage and visit its former possession, in its interior patio we carry out the last tasting with wines, virgin olive oil and sweets Typical Mallorcan.

Apart from Santa María, with the tour we will visit the wine villages of Consell, Binissalem, Sencelles and although it does not fit within the route, we have other areas with very good wineries such as Felanitx, Banyalbufar or Andratx.

“Ses Païsses” – Mallorca

“Ses Païsses” – the talayotic village

“Ses Païsses” is located at the exit of Artà to Capdepera, inside a holm oak forest above a small hill. The archaeological site, with an antiquity of more than 3.000 years, was declared in 1946 a Historical-Artistic Monument and between 1959 and 1963 the Italian professor Giovanne Lilliu made important discoveries about its constructions.

The Talayotic town of “Ses Païsses” was formed around a central talayot with a circular floor, a building that dominates the complex fulfilling its main mission of defense and surveillance and was developed with the construction of several rooms, a hypostyle hall and a defensive wall. According to Giovanne Lilliu, the site was used until the 2nd or 1st century BC, when its inhabitants, along with those of other towns in the area, settled at the foot of the hill of Sant Salvador, where today the town of Artà is located.

Without even having left the town, at a roundabout, we will find a sign to the right. Following less than one kilometer along this local road, we will arrive at the enclosure (camí de Sa Corballa s / n), which is open to the public:

  • From November to March from 9 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm, Monday to Friday (Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, closed)
  • From April to October from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm, from Monday to Saturday (including holidays).

The price for “Ses Païsses” is € 2 per entrance to this famous archaeological site of “Ses Païsses” including a tourist guide to make the itinerary. In addition, by purchasing the “Artacard” you can visit other places of cultural interest for € 3.

In order to facilitate your tour of Ses Païsses you should know that it has a parking area and also a picnic space under the shade of the sturdy oaks.

As a curiosity, in front of the door of the main entrance of the enclosure is a monolith dedicated to Miquel Costa i Llobera, poet and priest born in Pollença in 1854.

The town of “Ses Païsses” is one of the largest in Mallorca, with more than one hectare and is one of the best preserved, since its definitive abandonment, in the middle of the first century AD. it was not reoccupied, except occasionally: next to the central door was located an Arab hut and some coal activity as a lime kiln. In reality the life of the town was cut abruptly with the Roman conquest in 123 BC, but a small nucleus survived until the Romans founded a new settlement in the current town of Artà, under the Sant Salvador hill where, by the way, you can also see a Talayotic wall used as the foundation of the medieval wall.
“Ses Païsses” fell finally into oblivion but nowadays it is one of the fundamental sites to understand the way of life of the Talayotic and Balearic.

In addition, we recommend to visit also the Roman city of Pollentia. It is the most important archaeological site on the island of Mallorca and is located near Alcúdia, although its name was inherited several centuries later by the town of Pollensa.

OCEANIC POSIDONIA – A TREASURE TO BE PRESERVED.

Oceanic Posidonia is an aquatic plant, endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, belonging to the family Posidoniaceae. It is not an alga because it has the typical characteristics of terrestrial plants – roots, stems and leaves of up to one meter long.

Posidonia oceanic forms underwater meadows with an incredible ecological importance. It feeds more than 400 species of underwater plants and 1,000 species of marine and plant animals that find food and protection in the meadows and are also used for gastronomic purposes.

They are organized in clumps of 6 or 7 leaves, finding the oldest ones on the outside and the youngest ones in the interior reproducing both sexual and asexual way by stolons.

This species is found only in the Mediterranean Sea occupying an area of ??approximately 38,000 km², thus becoming a key species of the coastal marine ecosystem. Some believe that posidonia on the beaches is considered a solid waste and that, therefore, it should be eliminated. On the other hand, others consider that posidonia could be used as composting material, although this is prohibited by the Italian law 748/84, which prohibits the use of “algae and marine plants” for the preparation of compost.

On the beaches, especially in winter, there are also brown “balls” of Posidonia fibers formed by the waves.

It lives between 1 and 30 meters deep and, exceptionally, only in very clear waters, it can reach up to 40 meters, with temperatures between 10 and 28ºC.

The main factors that threaten the oceanic Posidonia meadows are maritime works, the pollution of coastal waters, the generation of artificial beaches and removal of dead leaves that reach the beaches and the anchorage of boats.

These ecosystems, which occupy approximately half a million km², are in decline on a global scale, with an estimated loss rate of 1-2% per year (four times the rate of loss of tropical forests); in the Mediterranean, however, this figure rises to 5%. In addition, the slow growth of these plants (2 cm / year) and their scarce seed production make the losses irreversible, since the recovery of a pasture requires several centuries.

The Balearic Islands have an area of ??55,795 hectares of Posidonia meadow, of which 7,650 hectares correspond to the waters of Formentera. This translates into 76.5 million m² to protect only in Formentera.

Let’s take care of the posidonia, value our ecosystem and respect nature. It is a treasure that was born so that we can preserve it, appreciate it and enjoy letting itself be part of the wonderful beaches of the Mediterranean and of the beauty that we can admire under the sea.

Gastronomy Mallorca – in addition to having a spectacular environment and some paradisaical places, will offer its tourists a quality, tasty and healthy gastronomic offer. You can enjoy a variety of typical foods in any corner of this island.

TUMBET.

Originally, due to the exceedance of vegetables, this dish is based on frying potatoes, tomatoes, aubergines, green pepper, red pepper and garlic and can be cooked either with meat or with fish.

TREMPÓ.

Original typical food is this typical summer salad that can be eaten solo or with bread. It is seasoned with oil, salt and paprika and mixes different cold meats, with tuna and many vegetables such as tomato, onion, green pepper and red pepper.

“ARRÒS BRUT”.

Typical and native to the island, it is undoubtedly the “arròs brut” made with rice, peas, green beans, onion, tomato, garlic, chicken liver, rabbit, mushrooms and various condiments such as saffron, cinnamon, paprika and pepper. All this stew makes it very characteristic because the dark broth that all these ingredients give off with their spices highlights the flavor making it an autochthonous dish from Mallorca.

FRITO MALLORQUÍN

Another of the star dishes and oldest in Mallorcan cuisine is the “frit de matances”. It can be made with fish or only with vegetables, although traditionally the fried is known to be with liver and pork or lamb, potatoes, red peppers, chives, fennel, peas, garlic, salt, olive oil and hot pepper.

CARACOLES A LA MALLORQUINA

A good dish of snails with broth made with parsley, garlic, fennel, mint and chili leaves no one indifferent. They are ideal as a starter and are combined with the traditional “all i oli” to emphasize the flavor.

RAW SAUSAGES: SOBRASSADA, BOTIFARRÓ I CAMAIOT.

The “sobrassada”, on the one hand is a very typical sausage of the island, being raw and cured it has been introduced inside a pork casing and has been maturing in a place without humidity, similar to “camaiot” although made of lean pork chopped, black pepper, anise and salt. On the other hand, the natural “botifarró”, in the same way, gets inside lamb casings and each and every one of them can be eaten either raw or cooked. A mandatory delicacy while on vacation.

ENSAIMADA.

Finally, gastronomy Mallorca shows up the sweetest snack and probably the best known worldwide. Its preparation requires practically a day between cooking and preparation of the dough but without a doubt, it’s worth it. Originally from Palma in the seventeenth century and for festivals and celebrations, these “ensaimadas” are created with water, sugar, eggs, dough and butter and can be filled or not, with cream, chocolate or with the sweetest and most typical “cabello de angel”.

Hiking Mallorca – the best open air sport

Hiking Mallorca has always been and will always be a magnificent sport to practice in a dream destination for everyone, being able to practice amount of outdoor activities. With the incomparable mild climate of the Balearic Islands, you should not miss the hiking routes that this beautiful island offers us, because as well as being able to cross it by bicycle, we can go on foot. Some of the most well-known routes perfect for hiking Mallorca, which we differentiate by their levels of difficulty, are the following:

  • Sant Elm-Sa Dragonera (medium difficulty)

Leaving from Andratx towards Sant Elm, passing through the Avenida de la Trapa towards the Tomeví road, it goes down until reaching the old monastery that is currently becoming a mountain refuge; we can contemplate wonderful views of the whole landscape including the Island of Dragonera and Cala en Basset.

  • Artà-Lluc (high difficulty)

Structured in several stages it also provides a fun and signalized tour.

Stage 1: Artà– Sa Duaia- Cala Torta- Torre d’Albarca- Refuge of S’Arenalet des Verger (17.258 km) -Parcialally signposted
Stage 2: S’Arenalet des Verger- S’esquena Llarga- S’Alqueria Vella d’Avall- Ermita de Betlem- Betlem (14,092 Km) -Signified
Stage 3: Betlem- Caloscans- Colònia de Sant Pere- Sa Canova- Son Serra de Marina– Son Serra- Montblanc- Santa Margalida (31,261 Km) -Partially signposted
Stage 4: Santa Margalida- Llubí- Inca (23.408 km)
Stage 5: Inca- Selva- Caimari- Lluc (15,170 km) -Partially signposted

  • Es Galatzó-ses Sínies (low difficulty)

In a walk of just over an hour, also adapted for people in wheelchairs; we find areas of traditional culture, typical mediterranean vegetation, a rest area and the village of Ses Sínies, an archaeological site dating from the Bronze Age.

  • Torrent de Pareis-Sa Calobra (medium difficulty)

Called “Natural Monument” in 2003 for the diversity of its fauna and flora. It has been progressively transformed avoiding the consequences of human action and develops on a rough soil free of moisture. All its way ends in sa Calobra, in the Sierra de Tramuntana, a totally recommended destination.

  • Sa Pedra en Sec (high difficulty)

Hiking Mallorca knows also the route of “Pedra en Sec” (= dry stone), aslo known as GR-221. It is a 283km trail that crosses the Sa Serra de Tramuntana de Mallorca from end to end. It is known by this name for the amount of constructions made with the method of dry wall construction that are found as they go along the road combining coastal areas, little or no inhabited towns and villages; agricultural areas; forests; bushes and the highest peaks.

Finally, it is worth mentioning in this post of hiking Mallorca “the route of the almond trees”; so called because in the Balearic Islands, thanks to its great flora richness and its mild climate, more than 7 million trees bloom from the end of January, especially in the municipalities of Marratxí, Bunyola and Sóller or also in towns such as San Llorenç, Son Servera or Llucmajor. A recommended route would be the one that goes from Selva to Moscarí, where we will enjoy without limits the authenticity and color of these beautiful trees in bloom.

The mountain range is located in the northwest of the island. Hence its name, since the north wind is the wind that comes from that direction, but more specifically its northern component, which is Tramuntana wind according to the wind rose local (Mediterranean). Its origin goes back to the alpine retreat of the secondary era. In it are the three large dams of Mallorca: Cúber, the Gorg Blau and the military for the use of the base of Puig Major.
